Determined Fareham Nomads swimmer Joe Davies claims bronze medal at national competition by 0.02 of a second.

The 15-year old schoolboy swam 50m backstroke in 29.02 – nearly one second ahead of his previous best time – at the Swim England National Summer Meet in Sheffield.

Head coach Davi Ferreira said: ‘“Joe had an excellent race. He had a very good start, maintained his stroke through to the middle 20 to 25 metres, and finished very strong.

“Joe finished third in a very hard fought race – with the fourth swimming finishing just 0.02 seconds slower than him. A massive well done to Joe.”

The previous week Davies raced at the British Summer National Championships in the 100 and 200 backstroke events, also at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

Davies finished 20th in Britain in the 15-years age group in the 100 backstroke in a time of 1.02.89. Followed by the 200 backstroke where he finished 18th in Britain in the 200 backstroke in a time of 2.15.24, almost a second improvement from his previous personal best.

Ferreira added: ‘It was a great first experience at British Summer National Championships for Joe, with a bit of nervousness that is starting to get better as he starts to get used to the big stage.”
